For years, the CMS-XL has provided dependable casing handling for applications starting at 6 5/8-inch casing O.D. Its single load shoulder design has proven itself across countless drilling operations and remains an excellent solution where a 180-ton capacity meets the job’s requirements.
However, today’s operations often demand greater load capacity without sacrificing compatibility or ease of use.
That’s where the CMS-XD was developed, to provide a higher-capacity solution while retaining the familiar features and functionality operators have come to trust including:
- API 4-inch-per-foot taper
- Standard safety flex handles
- Compatibile with the same inserts used in the CMS-XL

What Makes the CMS-XD Different?
At first glance, the CMS-XD looks similar to the CMS-XL. The biggest difference lies in the way it transfers working loads through the slip body.
Unlike the CMS-XL’s single load shoulder, the CMS-XD utilizes a multi-load shoulder design. Rather than concentrating the working load onto a single critical point, the load is distributed across multiple shoulders throughout the slip body.

This allows the CMS-XD to provide:
- Improved load distribution
- Reduced stress concentration on individual critical points
- Increased structural strength
- Consistent performance under demanding operating conditions
The result is a casing slip engineered specifically for heavier-duty applications.
500 Tons Across Every Assembly Size

The CMS-XL, for example, begins with a 180-ton rating at 6 5/8-inch casing O.D. and progressively increases in capacity as additional segments are added for larger casing sizes, reaching 500 tons on its largest assemblies.
The CMS-XD was designed with a different objective.
Whether configured for 6 5/8-inch casing O.D. or 13 3/8-inch casing O.D., every CMS-XD assembly is rated for 500 tons.
